SUMMARY:History Excursion to Coolidge and Pavo
DESCRIPTION:Our next road trip adventure takes us to Coolidge and Pavo\, Georgia! Coolidge is the youngest town of Thomas County\, with its formation date in 1901. The area was once part of the settlement of Ways and was home to yeoman farmers\, many of whom came to Thomas County to escape the destruction of North Georgia by General Sherman's army during the Civil War. Not far above Coolidge\, the town of Pavo sits on the county line dividing Thomas County and Brooks County. Originally called McDonald\, after 1898 the name was changed to "Pavo\," the Latin word for "peacock" which happened to be the postmaster's last name. \n\n\n\nTours meet at the Thomasville History Center at 9:30am to load onto the bus. Separate drivers can meet the group at the first tour stop by 10am. The bus will arrive back at the History Center by 4pm.\n\n\n\nGuests are asked to wear comfortable walking clothes and closed-toe shoes. Some ventures may involve wandering off the beaten path. Water will be available but it is recommended to bring a water bottle. Lunch and additional purchases made during the Road Trip are not included in the ticket price. Please let us know of any travel acommodations you may need in the comments or by emailing meme@thomasvillehistory.org.
