2026 Bicentennial Lunch & Learn Series: Homesteads and Hope: Georgia’s Midcentury Experiments in Communal Farming

Join Dr. John Cable as he discusses the topic of his next book: Homesteads and Hope: Georgia’s Midcentury Experiments in Communal Farming. Dr. Cable received his doctorate from Florida States University and leads classes in the History Department at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton.

In the 1930s and 1940s — amid depression and war — hundreds of Georgians joined planned farming communities. Dr. Cable will give an overview of resettlement communities run by the federal government, including Irwinville (Irwin County), Wolf Creek (Grady County), and the all-African American Flint River Farms project (Macon County) as well as non-government farming communities like Koinonia (Sumter County) and the Monastery of the Holy Spirit (Rockdale County).
