Exhibitions Manager
Position Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Exhibitions Manager is part of the Center’s Leadership Team and is responsible for the planning and implementation of exhibitions and collection-based installations.
Essential Duties:
- Create and maintain a comprehensive, long-term exhibitions calendar in coordination with the Executive Director.
- Coordinate all in-house exhibitions, satellite displays, and permanent collection gallery changes striving to anticipate issues and solve problems as they arise.
- Work with artists to prepare for exhibitions, including organizing artwork, planning layouts, and installing exhibitions.
- Prepare inventory lists, loan documents, and other documentation as needed related to exhibitions and collections.
- Create exhibition-related text for wall labels, title walls, panels, credit lines, and other printed exhibition support materials.
- Lead the development of all exhibition budgets and keep projects on schedule and within budget. Monitor actuals versus budgets to ensure that expenses stay within budget, and flag overages on a timely basis. Works closely with Finance and Development to ensure budgets stay accurate and current.
- Support the Wildlife Arts Festival Fine Art Show by advising on layout, installation, supply preparation, and curatorial decisions.
- Liaise with the Facilities Director and other staff as needed to prepare galleries for installation and troubleshoot during the installation period.
- Develop and maintain relationships with artists, collectors, and other stakeholders in the art community.
- Draft and negotiate artist, guest curator, and any other necessary professional service agreements as well as MOUs and contracts. Process all exhibition contract related payments and invoices to individuals and institutions.
- Moderate artist panels and discussions as needed; provide exhibition tours to visitors as needed.
- Manage and oversee the Artist-in-Residence program, including application process, scheduling, public programming, and other support as needed
- Design and implement skill-building programs for artists in the Collective in the form of training workshops, consultations, convenings, resource sharing and/or information exchanges.
- Recruit, train, and supervise all art handlers and volunteers involved with exhibition installation.
- Use project management best practices, such as detailed project schedules, budgets, and communication platforms.
- Manage the Center’s permanent art collection, ensuring it is properly documented, cared for, and utilized.
- Provide information and support for grant applications and advancement initiatives.
- Participate in the Center’s annual and long-range planning processes.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Qualifications and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, arts administration, or related field required
- Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in a museum or commercial gallery environment preferred
- Excellent writing and public speaking abilities
- Ability to work well and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences including staff, volunteers, administrators, funders, general public, and other constituents
- Ability to work effectively in a team setting and collaborate across the organization
- Knowledge of museum management, collections/exhibitions management, curatorial principles and practices
- Possess high level of attention to detail, accuracy and ability to meet deadlines
- Maintain highest standards of integrity, including confidentiality of privileged information
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
- Highly motivated, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and to work independently as well as in a team environment
Working Environment and Physical Demands
- Must have ability to communicate by voice via telephone, read and understand English and generate written communication manually and using a computer.
- Must have the ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time, lift and move documents and supplies up to 25 lbs., and bend or reach to file and retrieve documents.
- Must have the ability to perform physical tasks related to the job.
- Valid driver’s license and access to your own vehicle is required.
- Occasional weekend and evening availability required.
Thomasville Center for the Arts provides company paid life and short-and long-term disability benefits. Additionally, the Center participates in a QSEHRA medical program, providing employees a minimum of $325 per month to be used for eligible medical expenses, including health insurance premiums and co-pays.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
