Part-time Performing Arts Instructor
Position Summary: The Art in the Afternoon Visual Arts Program Instructor is responsible for planning and implementing age-appropriate art lessons for youth (grades K-8) enrolled in our after-school art program. They are the primary supervisors in our classrooms and ensure that their students are having fun in a safe and welcoming environment while they explore their creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and expand their artistic abilities.
Art in the Afternoon Instructors teach in a variety of art media and have opportunities to lead a range of programs based on their experience and arts background. Classrooms are separated by grade level groupings: K – 3rd, 4th – 6th, 7th-8th.
Instructors must be able to work at the Center on school days (following the City of Thomasville & Thomas County School District calendars) from 3:00-5:30pm with occasional hours at other times for staff meetings and trainings. Instructors are provided one hour of paid plan time per week, which may be completed at the Center or remotely.
Responsibilities:
- Organize and conduct performing arts classes which will enable students to develop their acting, singing, and movement skills, through active participation and hands-on learning.
- Design and build curriculum, including lesson plans.
- Create and submit classroom supply needs to Program Manager at least two weeks in advance.
- Submit attendance records and class summaries weekly.
- Facilitate fun, exciting, and creative art activities using a variety of techniques and media.
- Create a positive and inclusive class environment allowing students to feel valuable and supported.
- Communicate student-specific needs and concerns in a timely manner to Programs Manager
- Maintain classroom organization and cleanliness.
- Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
- Serve as a mentor to the students and support the students, families, and community in building relationships with the program as it grows.
- Assist students in presenting a body of work at the end of each term.
Qualifications and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, performing arts, or comparable degree and/or training courses a plus.
- Job-related experience in teaching is preferred; however, we believe that part of our mission as an emerging artist organization is to guide future educators by providing them quality teaching experiences.
- Must have valuable experience working with youth in an organized setting as a lead instructor, assistant, student teacher, volunteer, etc. Ability to present a positive image of the organization.
- Ability to maintain professional and productive relationships with other instructors, program staff, administration, parents, and all other parties involved in the production and completion of programming.
- Strong organization and planning skills

- Enthusiasm, patience, and tact
- Problem solving and analytical skills to adjust curriculum to suit students, program, and site.
- Effective written communication skills to prepare lesson plans, letters to parents, etc. with accurate grammar.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance, work independently and as a team member.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
- Ability to communicate via voice as well as read and speak English.
- The ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds including emergency alarms.
- Ability to stand and walk during 90-minute classes.
- Ability to carry up to 20 pounds, as well as bend, kneel, and reach.
Compensation: The Art in the Afternoon Instructor is a part-time hourly position, with compensation of $25 per hour. As this position involves less than 25 hours per week, it does not provide health or other benefits.
